Artist Statement

The work I create oscillates between presentations of graphic illustration and abstracted terrain. My pieces, often between 3” x 6” and 15” x 18”, are made through drawing, printmaking, and unconventional applications of makeup. All of my work is rooted in process, slowing down and spending time with the routines of the methods I use.

My makeup and illustrations revolve around a color palette of reds, yellows, greens and blues, and often include imagery of clowns. Using pen and pastel on textured paper in conjunction with colors I see as structural/building blocks, I’m reminded throughout the creation process of the youth, growth, and vulnerability that my work portrays.

My abstract work in contrast consists of a palette of black, white, and greys. The subject matter is concentrated on combining and confusing near and far perspectives of our experiences of Earth, from the microscopic to the celestial. Using methods of lithography, intaglio, and charcoal on gouache, each piece prompts the viewer to question if they are looking at life on a cellular level, a blurred landscape, or perhaps even a constellation. In times of turmoil, it’s comforting to have reminders of what has existed before, continues to exist around us, and will exist long after.
